Help With 4x4x4?

Postby Vappid » Sun Mar 06, 2011 4:07 am

Back in December I bought a 4x4x4 cube and I can solve it..
But on average it takes me seven minutes or so...
Is there anything I can do to speed up my solve or make it easier?
I've been told to memorize one algorithm for parity that will get rid of most, and just solve from there...
But they failed to mention which algorithm that was. >.<

I use 4 parity algs for a 4x4. You can see them all demoed on this vid I made. It covers the main parity cases for the 4x4 and 5x5.

Thanks man:)
So do these fix parity in general?
Because I'm still having some problems..
Mostly with corners..
Sorry if these are stupid questions..
I'm still getting the hang of the 4x4x4..

There is one more parity for 4x4 that I didn't see in the 4x4 part of the video: the double parity. Here is an algorithm for it - r2 B2 r' U2 r' U2 B2 r' B2 r B2 r' B2 r2 B2. This is a pure algorithm, so it only affects the pieces that need to be solved. I copied it from this page which gives another option - (Rr)2 B2 (Rr)' U2 (Rr)' U2 B2 (Rr)' B2 (Rr) B2 (Rr)' B2 (Rr)2 B2. This one is not pure. I think it is supposed to be used when you first find out that you will need to use it, instead of doing it as the last thing of the solve.

I'm having problems with that page. It crashed Firefox twice and Chrome loaded the page but refused to show the double parity pic. Can you post a pic here please?

So, you're having a problem with corners and parity? What method are you using? Most parity algs are based on you using the reduction method. That's where you solve the centres first, then pair the edges, then solve like a 3x3, fixing parity usually at the second cross part (last layer) but some people save it for the very end.

You might find if you are using this method, and solving parity last that corners become more of an issue. Can I suggest that the single edge flip alg is used when you have 1 or 3 edges of the cross solved, but can't make an even number, instead of ignoring the issue until the end.

If you are using another method entirely, such as the cage, where you solve the centres last, parity might be entirely different. I can't help here since I use reduction method. It would be helpful to know what method you use and exactly what you normally do to solve the last layer.

Think I found my problem..
I generally fix parity as late as possible..
I'll try it when solving the cross on the last layer.
Thanks for the advice guys:)

Well..
I tried what you said..
And I still ended up with the corners messed up.. >.<
I have a feeling I'm doing something wrong..

Ok. Walk us through a solve. If you can post pics that'd help.

There isn't actually a picture; there's a Java animation. Here's an image of the front.Image
