Help Remembering Algorithms!!!

Postby 20four7n » Sat Jul 30, 2011 2:14 am

First off, I would like to say hi to everyone, im a new member :D

Well just recently (1 week ago) I solved a Rubik's cube, but not without the help of a sheet of algorithms. I'm starting to learn some simple algorithms, but i just can't seem to get the longer ones stuck in my brain. Does anyone have any tips on remembering algorithms??
BTW, Im using the cross method.

Thanks guys!

Yeah! Nice job, in a few months hopefully you'll be able to solve it in under a minute :3
Now with the algorithms, I used to have trouble memorizing them as well, but now I use these methods

1. Patterns
eg U R U' L' U R' U' L
first I see there are 2 URUL. The first one has primes on the 3rd and 4th, and the second one on the 2nd and 3rd, like this
URU'L' UR'U'L

2. Visual
let's use that example again, U R U' L' U R' U' L
first I move the U slice left
then I put the right side up
then I move the U slice back
then I put the left slice up

then I move the U slice left again
then I put the right side down
then I move the U slice back
then I put the left slice down
This may seem like a long description, but I visually take it like that--I notice a pattern in the pieces movement

3. Muscle
(this is what I use most of the time now)
repeat an algorithm over and over again until you can do it subconsciously. I prefer this over the other ones because it ends up faster and I can remember it for a pretty long time. Although I must admit, it's kinda brute force.

Hope this helped, and welcome to the forums!

Welcome!

Adding to what Sharkretriver said, you also need to know which algorithm goes with which case. If you're learning an algorithm by doing it repeatedly, while doing this you can look at an image of what the algorithm does. You probably won't get things mixed up unless you're trying to learn too many at a time, but I figured I'd mention it anyway.

Also, you will probably remember an algorithm better if you go over it again. For example, if you first looked at it in the morning, you could go over it again in the afternoon.

Thanks a lot guys!!

Thanks for the detailed responses! You really helped me out a lot!!
I can now solve the 3x3 cube without looking at the sheet of algorithms!!!

My PB is now 1.20 because of you!!!!!!

Cheers :D

You're so welcome XD
ok now I recommend these
1. display the time properly, mm:ss.ms, so it's 1:20, not 1.20 (ppl make a big deal about it)
2. practice fingertricks, all faces except R and L use them
3. practice lookahead, while solving a piece look for another one, so you don't have to pause in between

Hope it looks something like this when you're done http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Alz5t_OR47I
note the first solve I'm using Dan Brown Method, which I think you're using

Have fun speedcubing!
