Largest Operable Cube

Postby nelsob2 » Mon May 14, 2012 1:28 pm

Can anyone tell me if there is a record for the largest operable Rubik's Cube? Students would like to have or build one at Renssealer Polytechnic Institute in Troy NY. Are there any size records out there?

I think the largest that you can buy is the 17x17x17 from Oskar Van Deventer. Here is a vid of it:

I can't post a link to a site selling a rival product, but I'm sure a little simple investigative work should help you find one if you have a couple of thousand dollars going spare. :D

People have made much larger ones as a visual model, but not built one.

thank you- I am actually lookinhg for the largest in size with just the standard design, 3X3 on each side. We want to build one that is 5foot by 5foot and I need to know if anyone has already achieved something like this. It will be operable but it will take a few people together to operate.

Not sure if there is an upper limit to building them. Largest I know of that's been built is this one by legendary puzzle modifier / designer Tony Fisher.

There is not currently a record recognized by Guinness World Records. Large 3x3s have been made though. The following picture is of a cube that works and is 1x1x1 meter (3 feet 3⅜ inches).

To make one and have it recognized by Guinness as a world record, there are guidelines that have to be followed. I can post a link that shows those guidelines if you want. (Are links to the TP forum okay borginator2?)

I think in this case an exception could be made! ;)

There was a discussion in this thread on another forum about the largest Rubik's cube. The guidelines from Guinness World Records I mentioned are in the last post there.

A quick scan of that thread reveals that while your 5 foot cube would be awesome, you'd be looking at something more like 3 times that to make the record books. The record is 3m 52 cm ish. So you'd need a good 12 footer to beat it (3.52m is about 11 and a half feet). I'd aim for 15 to be safe.
