You might as well go buy it, because it's not even expensive. Also, aren't there threads on this already?

Lubix is an alternative, though it is expensive compared to silicone spray. The smallest size costs $9.99. I recently got some CRC silicone spray, and it was about $4. Also, that $9.99 Lubix will lubricate about fifteen cubes. The spray will lubricate many more cubes than that.

There are other threads. Just search "lubricant" or "lube" in General Rubik's Discussion or Speedcubing to find some.

Alternatives are WD-40 or petroleum jelly (Vaseline), however the oil in it will dissolve or melt plastic. So if you don't want to ruin your cube then stay away from WD-40 or Vaseline.
I really recommend Silicone lubricant either spray types like Jig-a-loo or CRC. I, and most speedcubers, personally like oil type silicone like Lubix or Traxxas 50k DIff Oil. These two are really the same stuff in terms of performance but I would go for the Traxxas 50k Diff Oil as it is only $8 for 50CC while Lubix is $14 for only 2CC. Why would you pay more for the same stuff? Check out www.bestspeedcube.com/speed-cube-lubrication/ for some info on speed cube lubrication.

Erm... yes it will. Petroleum Jelly = Vasseline. And it does rot cubes. Don't believe me? Try it for a month then clean your cube out. The black gunk is the vasseline mixed with the melted plastic. Leave it long enough and it will crack and break.
Please take off topic discussion off this forum. Thanks.
