What is the shortest algorithm 2 flip a middle layer edge piece like in the picture.

You might use the edge-flip algorithm, which flips the top two edges on the cube across from each other.
like this:

          M U' M U' M U2 M' U' M' U' M' U2

This algorithm ONLY flips those two edges, and leaves the rest of the cube out
i know it may seem long, but if you use your ring fingers for the M's, on a really well lubed/springed
cube this move is very fast

I meant flip 1 edge not swap 2.

your not swapping any edges, just flipping 2 in that algorithm
and ummm there is no possible way on a Rubik's cube to flip only ONE piece.
its just not possible
you have to flip 2, or 4, or 6,......
so you might as well just do the edge flipper move and flip 2

In the LBL method I am solving the middle layer and I need an algorithm 2 flip 1 edge that is in the middle layer without messing up the bottom layer or any of the other edges in the middle layer. I'm sure there was a way 2 do it that i've forgotten.

yes theres a way to do it...
use the edge flip sequence i mentioned above....

or you could manually pop out the piece and reverse it in the top layer, then re-insert it

Cronus, your 'method' would only get his edge piece stuck in another spot in the middle layer. He would never get it to the top layer.

no, his edge piece would stay in the same spot
hes not trying to get it into the top layer
hes trying to flip it
