Yes, metalopig, that's pretty close to what I had seen.  You'll notice the corners are just 'shaved' off more so than Erno's original design, which only shaved them off so that only one cubie was affected.  However, the design I had seen didn't have the corners shaved off so much that the shavings touched each other, as in your design, but I believe it was close.  I am going to try and get a picture.

It's funny how it appears to be more complex, because there are more sides, when, logically, it's the same puzzle.

A long time ago I had a 3x3x3 World cube, it was black (the oceans) and the continents were colored each their own color.  I messed it up by accident when I was a kid, and obviously never got it back together.  But now that I can solve the 3x3x3, if I were to learn how to orient the centers (which doesn't matter for a solid colored center), then I would be able to solve it.  I wish I could find it...  I notice rubiks.com has a 2x2x2 model, but I wonder if I could find a 3x3x3 model again...?

I guess as everyone can plainly see, it was called 'Rubik's World Puzzle'.  If you look closely at the lines, you can see that it's really a 3x3x3 puzzle.
